the better to ~ より～するために
= so as to ~ better
読んでいたペーパーバックの長い文の途中で突然 the better が出て来て、文の構造がわからなくなってしまった。the better to ~ で 「より～するために」という副詞句だった。
辞書(Oxford) の例文から
Best to show up with a lot of photos of your cats or your grandchildren, the better to facilitate conversations with those around you.
このように the better の直前がコンマで区切られていればわかりやすい。より会話しやすくするため、となる。
I lift myself on my elbows the better to hear the rest of their conversation.
コンマがないと直前とのつながりで？となってしまうかもしれないが、the better は 後ろの hear に掛かり、the better to hear… が …をよりよく聞くためという副詞句で lift に掛かる。
書き換えて
I lift myself on my elbows (so as) to hear the rest of their conversation better.
と同じ意味になる。
学校英語で以下の用法は習う。
「the 比較級 ~, the 比較級 …」 ～すればするほど…
「all the 比較級」それだけいっそう
これらと同じ the better の使い方といえる。the は副詞で better に掛かり、better も副詞で to の次の動詞に掛かる。
わかってしまえば何でもないが、the better to という言い方があると知ったのだった。
